Mel Blount
Stats: 200 games, 57 interceptions, 2 touchdowns
Blount is said to be responsible for the implementation of the “Mel Blount” rule, which made it illegal for defensive backs to make contact with a receiver beyond five yards from the line of scrimmage. His propensity for mauling receivers throughout his tenure with on the Steelers’ Steel Curtain defenses helped keep that defense chugging along. In fact, he didn’t allow a single touchdown his entire rookie season. He won the 1975 Defensive Player of the Year award, grabbing 11 interceptions in just 14 games. He won four Super Bowls in the 1970s.
