The number of defenders on the field for a team may vary. The setup I experienced most often was 4, excluding the goalie: two central defenders and a right and left defender. Typically, without a solid, hardworking defense, a team will not win a game. When an offending team is attacking, the defense must stop the offense, retrieve the ball, and get it to either its midfielders or offenders. To stop an offense, the defense may steal the ball or employ a number of other defensive moves, like a slide tackle.
